The Dell Inspiron I7548-7286SLV is a mid-range laptop that has a somewhat mixed set of features. The display is touchscreen, which is nice, but has a somewhat low resolution. The 12 GB of RAM is great, but the 5400 RPM mechanical hard drive is somewhat of a bottleneck. The Core i7 5500U processor is powerful, yet it’s a generation behind the latest Core i7 series and is actually the least powerful Core i7 processor from the 5th generation. I am sure this laptop has a niche for those who want a touchscreen laptop with somewhat high-end hardware specs at a mid-range price.
15.6″ Touch Screen
The only thing that is actually impressive about this monitor is the fact that it’s touchscreen. For me, personally, I don’t actually prefer touchscreen laptops. I’m just fine using a touchpad or a USB mouse. Windows 8 and Windows 10 do have some features that make a touchscreen nice, though. This display has a somewhat meager resolution of just 1366×768. Dell calls this resolution “typical” in their product description. In 2016, the only way 1366×768 is “typical” is if you’re buying a low-end machine (sub $400). For a laptop of this price, I would have liked them to opt for a Full HD screen at 1920×1080 resolution at the very least.
If you are even considering this laptop I would definitely check out the HP 15-ac121nr. It has a Full HD touchscreen and a 6th generation Core processor and costs less than the Dell Inspiron I7548-7286SLV. I’m not a HUGE HP fan, however, the new 15-ac121nr is definitely worth considering.
5th Gen Intel Core i7-5500U Mobile Processor
It’s somewhat surprising to me that Dell decided to cut corners on this mid-range laptop and include a 5th generation Core i7 CPU rather than the latest 6th generation processor. Is the 5th generation Core i7-5500U dual-core mobile processor powerful? Sure, of course it is. It was one of the very best mobile processor Intel had created.. at the beginning of 2015. This processor isn’t a BAD processor, though, it’s most certainly a GOOD processor with plenty of power. It has 4MB of cache and runs at a clock speed of 2.4 GHz that can boost to 3.0 GHz in turbo mode. However, it is the least powerful 5th generation Core i7 mobile processor.
12 GB of RAM
Ok, this is where things start to look good for the Dell Inspiron I7548-7286SLV. The 12 GB of RAM is definitely impressive and probably part (most) of the reason why this laptop is priced in the $500+ range. Hopefully, everyone knows that having A LOT of RAM is the single most effective way to increase the performance of your PC. When RAM runs out your system starts to use the hard drive to store active information that would normally be stored in RAM. This is a HUGE bottleneck, especially when you have a mechanical hard drive (as opposed to SSD) like this laptop does. 12 GB is insurance against ever running into low memory issues that destroy system performance. Even if you use applications that are memory hogs (what applications aren’t these days?) you should have more than enough RAM to power through.
1 TB Mechanical Hard Drive
I love the fact that this laptop has A LOT of RAM and A LOT of internal storage with a massive 1 TB hard drive. The only downside is that Dell opted for a 5400 RPM mechanical hard drive. Mechanical hard drives are slow, slow, SLOW, compared to SSD drives. This is further compacted by the fact that this hard drive runs at a very low 5400 RPM. The good thing is that you have lots of RAM in this laptop so you won’t have to worry about performance dragging due to excessive virtual memory usage. The bad thing is that you have a mechanical hard drive that WILL break down in a few years. It’s not a matter of IF you will have a hard drive crash with a mechanical hard drive, it’s only a matter of WHEN.
Built-in Stereo Speakers with Waves MaxxAudio
According to Waves, their partnership with Dell in 2010 has produced some of the best sounding laptops in the industry. Whether or not they’re the best sounding laptops is a matter of personal opinion. The real sticking point is the fact that the sound of this laptop was more than an afterthought. My biggest pet peeve with laptops is weak sound and this Dell definitely delivers in the sound department.
