Asus X540LA-SI30205P

        Build Quality

            • Inexpensive
            • Good build quality
            • Nice keyboard
            • Responsive trackpad
            • Windows 10

            • Needs more RAM
            • Mechanical hard drive
            • Not the best display in the world

The Asus X540LA-SI30205P is a nice entry-level laptop that delivers a moderate amount of computing power for a very reasonable price. It has a 5th Gen Core i3 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. Overall this laptop would make a very economical choice for a student or a nice laptop to do web browsing, use office apps, or other minor tasks for anyone.

            Core i3-5020U Processor

This 5th generation Core i3 processor from Intel is dual-core as well as multi-threaded. What you end up with is two cores with two threads a piece, about the same as having a quad-core computer when you use applications that support multi-threading. Overall it’s a sufficient CPU and I wouldn’t see any reason to look for a Core i5 laptop when the Core i3 laptops cost less and are almost as fast.

            4 GB of RAM

This is really something that Asus could have improved. I don’t really like seeing 4 GB of RAM in a laptop being sold in 2016. I think 8 GB is the baseline now, with 4 GB machines falling to the wayside. However, you can’t really complain too much about the lack of RAM for the price. You could always upgrade to 8 GB of RAM fairly easily.

            1 TB Mechanical Hard Drive

Another con for me. I really like seeing systems with SSD storage these days. It’s much faster and much more reliable. It’s also quieter and produces less heat. The 1 TB of storage is really great, except that one day you could lose 1 TB in the blink of an eye if your drive fails. An upgrade to SSD would do this laptop a lot of good, especially booting up the system and loading applications more quickly.

            15.6″ “HD” Display

They call it an HD display, but it isn’t 1920×1080 pixel Full HD. Instead, it’s 1366×768 HD which is closest to 720p, not Full HD at 1080p. I think that this might be acceptable on a low-end laptop, such as this. However, I really like to see 15+ inch screen to have the full 1920×1080 resolution.
