The Asus ROG GL502VS-DB71 is the most lightweight gaming laptop that ASUS has ever created measuring less than one inch thick and weighing in at under five pounds.
Don’t let the portability fool you, though. This laptop has a 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX1070 video chip that has 8 GB of dedicated DDR4 RAM.
Throw in the duo-copper cooling system and tactile scissor keyboard and you’ve got one of the best gaming laptops around in a super compact package.
Intel Quad-Core i7-6700HQ Processor
The 6th generation Core i7 6700HQ processor in this laptop is one of the most powerful mobile CPUs on the market. There’s only a small handful of processors that could beat this one and only then by a slim margin.
The 6700HQ clocks in at 2.6 GHz with turbo mode up to 3.5 GHz. Most mobile processors on the market are about 1 GHz slower, give or take. Not only does this processor have a super fast clock speed, it also has a full 6 MB of cache. This is 2-3 times the cache of most modern mobile processors.
NVIDIA Ge-Force GTXTM 1070 Graphics
Recently, PC World reviewed the new NVIDIA Ge-Force GTX 1070 desktop graphics card. The article opened with a very flattering quote, “Meet the new people’s champion. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 delivers more performance than the $1000 Titan X for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the power.”
They went on to say that “The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 delivers more performance than the $1000 Titan X for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the power.” Read more here.
Now the power of the “people’s champion” video chip is available on a laptop. This is no cop-out video chip. ASUS could have just as easily gone with a somewhat outdated chip to save money. Instead, they went for the gusto and pulled out one of the most badass video chips they could have possibly stuffed into their new ultra-lightweight gaming laptop.
IPS G-SYNC Display
What good is a badass gaming laptop without a killer display to match? ASUS wasn’t slacking when they picked out this panel for their new gaming rig. The 15 inch IPS panel in this laptop is G-SYNC compatible, so not only are the colors vivid and rich, but you also won’t ever have to worry about stuttering and tearing on the screen.
ASUS also included a mini-DisplayPort connection. This is important because only a DisplayPort connection will be compatible with G-SYNC capable external monitors. This allows you to connect an external monitor and still enjoy all the benefits of G-SYNC technology.
While the display IS Full HD with a 1920×1080 pixel resolution, I would have liked to see a QHD or 4K display on this laptop, even though it might have been overkill.
Tactile Backlit Scissor-Switch Gaming Keyboard
While keyboards are generally an afterthought when it comes to laptop design, this laptop really delivers. It has a fully tactile scissor-switching keyboard complete with red LED backlighting. The AWSD keys are highlighted to help you find your position quickly while gaming. The keys have a mere 1.6mm of travel distance to help you react quickly and eliminate ghosting.
