ASUS PG348Q Review

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q

The ASUS PG348Q is a 34 inch curved ultra-wide IPS display with a 3440×1440 pixel resolution. It features NVIDIA G-sync technology that is so important to creating a crisp, sharp display while gaming. Not only does the display on this monitor look great, it also saves your eyes with a blue light filter and flicker-free display. The standard 3-year warranty with free two-way shipping from ASUS is the icing on the cake.

34 Inches at 3440×1440 Resolution

This monitor is huge, however, it’s not quite as big as a 34-inch monitor that has a 16:9 aspect ratio (standard widescreen). The reason is that this monitor is ultra-wide with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Basically, you’re giving up a little bit of vertical height on the screen compared to a standard widescreen monitor. This monitor has a resolution of 3440×1440, which essentially makes it an ultra-wide version of the QHD (Quad-HD) specification, NOT to be mistaken with 4K UHD. QHD is four times 720p resolution while UHD is four times 1080p resolution. This resolution lands right between standard Full HD and 4K UHD.

IPS Panel

Ok, this is where this monitor really shines, especially if you’re a gamer. Hopefully, by now you know that IPS panels are preferable for a number of reasons. They provide a much wider color gamut through the accurate reproduction of bright vivid colors and rich, deep blacks. They also provide a much wider viewing angle, up to 178 degrees vertical and horizontal (sorry, not sure what the exact numbers are on this model, although if I had to bet I’d say 178 both ways). What this amounts to is a much more realistic image that’s closer to what the original artist/programmer intended.

NVIDIA G-Sync

If you’re a gamer (and hopefully a fan of NVIDIA) then this is the meat and potatoes of this monitor. Having a high resolution is great, having a wide color gamut is even better, but having G-sync enabled will take your gaming to a whole new level. G-sync works by dynamically syncing the refresh rate of the monitor with the video card. This eliminates ghosting, tearing, and other annoying visual anomalies that have plagued monitors for decades. This technology is great for gaming but also equally good for watching high-resolution videos with lots of action, such as sporting events. Please note that you will need an NVIDIA video card that supports G-sync in order to take advantage of this feature.

Curved, Ultra-Wide Display

When it comes to providing total immersion, there a two monitor features which are said to help: a curved display and an ultra-wide aspect ratio. The 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio (hopefully) extends the display to the limits of your peripheral vision, depending on how far away from the monitor you sit. The curved nature of the display is meant to wrap around your field of vision, providing less a flat, boring picture. Personally, I’m not a fan of the curved display. Some people even experience negative side effects from curved displays like discomfort or disorientation of vision. Some people happen to love curved displays. It’s all a matter of personal preference.

EyeCare Technology

Let’s face it, you don’t buy a monitor like this to check your email. You’re going to be spending hours blasting noobs online in your favorite FPS or consuming high definition media. ASUS EyeCare Technology has a blue light filter along with a flicker-free picture that helps to eliminate eye fatigue during those long viewing sessions. If you’ve ever gotten a bad headache from staring at a screen all day then you know exactly how important this feature really is.

Best Warranty in the Biz

The warranty that ASUS offers with this monitor is no joke, especially compared to the standard in the industry. ASUS will pay to ship your monitor both ways for up to 3 years if it should ever have any problems. Most other monitor manufacturers only offer a 1-year warranty and it’s up to you to ship them the monitor. For this reason, I would recommend choosing an ASUS monitor, even if this isn’t the exact one you’re looking for.
