The ASUS F556UA-AS54 is a laptop that has very good specs at a mid-range price, as you will soon discover in this review. This is indeed a modern laptop complete with Type C USB, 802.11ac WiFi and one of the latest Core i5 processors Intel has made. The 8 GB of RAM is great for performance and the 256 GB SSD drive is the icing on the cake. You can expect a laptop that boots up fast and performs well even in resource intensive applications. Windows 10 comes pre-installed and features Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana. All in all, this is a very good laptop for the money.
15.6-Inch Full-HD Display
I’m a believer that bigger is better, especially when it comes to monitors on a laptop. I know, a lot of people prefer 14-inch screens or even smaller for portability reasons. I really enjoy a 15.6+ inch screen with Full HD myself. The large screen really makes this more of a desktop replacement than a laptop that would be ideal for students or mobile professionals to tote around. The Full HD 1920×1080 resolution means you can watch HD video as it was meant to be seen without any downscaling.
Powerful Intel i5-6200U 2.3 GHz Processor
Although this isn’t THE most powerful processor on the planet, it’s certainly in the Top 10 when it comes to mobile processors from Intel. This CPU runs at 2.3 GHz but it can burst up to 2.8 GHz in turbo mode when you need the extra juice. I think ASUS did a good job of balancing performance and value by selecting this particular processor. Anything better and the price tag would have certainly inflated quite a bit.
256GB Solid-State Drive
I really can’t over-emphasize how much better solid state drives are compared to conventional mechanical hard drives. They run faster, they’re completely silent, and you don’t have to worry about a dreaded hard drive crash that plagues mechanical drives with their spinning platters. Solid state drives are quite a bit more expensive and finding a large 256 GB drive in a laptop in this price range is rare. Hard drives are easily the biggest bottleneck in computing and having an SSD helps to somewhat eliminate this bottleneck.
The Right Connections at the Right Price
I really love that ASUS went ahead and threw a USB 3.1 Type C port onto this computer. The beauty of the new USB standard is that you can connect your laptop to a monitor to add an additional display while also charging your laptop simultaneously. You can also daisy-chain multiple devices of any variety. I think that anyone considering a BRAND NEW laptop should definitely look into USB 3.1 and consider it a priority to future-proof their device. The ASUS F556UA-AS54 also has an HDMI port, VGA connection and features 802.11ac wireless.
